This week me and my readers are having difficulty to access my blog, it took aged to load the page and it showing some error message, saying "error: [MySQL server has gone away]".
This error mean either the database has been shutdown or the connection to database has been terminated. After some investigation, I found that the database are still alive, so the conclusion is the connection between wordpress to mysql are having some problem.
So, I started to find the root cause behind this, I went through the Mysql variables and saw the "wait_timeout" are set to 100 sec. It just too short to cater some large queries and when the cpu is heavily loaded, connection to Mysql will reach it bottleneck and fails. Some of you may wonder what is "wait_timeout" variable?
wait-timeout is the number of seconds the server waits for activity on a non-interactive connection before closing it. This timeout applies only to TCP/IP and Unix socket file connections, not to connections made via named pipes, or shared memory.I reported this issue immediately to the web hosting provider and within 24 hours, they alter the "wait_timeout" variables to 500 sec. Problem solved.

Long time since I last play the computer games. I don't know whether everyone feel the same, when I'm getting older, I have lost my interest in playing games, especially those strategy and online games that takes you a lot of time to accomplish.
But recently I have regained that interest and start looking for some very famous RPG games that I played before like 金庸群侠传 and 侠客英雄传. I know these 2 are very very old games, but I still enjoy playing it.
Since I'm using Ubuntu, so I have to install WINE and Dosbox in order to play the game.
1. To install WINE and Dosbox
sudo apt-get install wine dosbox
2. After installed WINE and Dosbox, use WINE to install the game
wine installer.exe
Eg:(Follow the wizard to complete the installation, if you are installing chinese game, change your gnome session to chinese in order to read the chinese character)
3. Once finish install the game, run dosbox
Goto Applications>Games>DOSBox Emulator
4. Then type the following command in DOSBox Emulator
- mount c /home//.wine ### Mount C to wine directory
- c: ### Change to C Drive
- cd DRIVE_C/PROGRA~1/JINGYONG/ ### Go to your game installed directory
- PLAY.BAT ### Execute the game

Migrating user accounts can be very troublesome when you have a large numbers of users. So, is always recommend to deploy active directory or LDAP.
If your organization didn't deploy centralized user database like AD & LDAP and have large portion of users needed to transfer from Old server to the new one. Don't worry, you don't need to manually key in all the records 1-by-1, there's always a faster way to achieve this by using script.
I have written 2 perl scripts to perform the migration.
- [download#3] (run in old server) - migrate user accounts from old server and generate a library with all the captured user data.
- [download#5] (run in new server) - include the library generated by migrate_passwd.pl and add all the user_account to the new server.
Steps:
1) Download migrate_passwd.pl in the old server and run it
./migrate_passwd.pl /etc/passwd /tmp/accounts.pm
2) Then copy the /tmp/accounts.pm to the new server (put this file into the same directory of serversetup.pl)
3) Download serversetup.pl in the new server and run it
./serversetup.pl
4) Done

The title says it all, you can run ping and traceroute in your internet browser. It's can be handy for sys admin to do their troubleshooting without the need to open a terminal/command prompt.
Steps
1. Open up your firefox browser.

Ubuntu: Last time when I saw my Windows user friend showing off how fast he's able to launch his application using 'Launchy', I was so impressed and thinking why don't we have similar application running in Ubuntu Desktop. So I did a search and finally I found an application called Gnome Do, a launcher allows you to quickly search for many items in your desktop environment. And it do not only allows you to search items, it also allows you to specify actions to perform on search results.
To install Gnome DO:
Steps
1. open terminal and type
sudo apt-get install gnome-do
2. Once Gnome Do is installed, first you need to manually run the application, then only you can summon it by pressing Super<Windows Key> + Space.
3. Instead of running Gnome-do manually everytimes, you can add Gnome-do to become startup programs. Just go to System>Preferences>Sessions>Startup Programs tab
- Click Add
- Enter any name on "Name:" field
- Enter "/usr/bin/gnome-do" on "Command:" field
- reboot
4. Now everytimes you login, Gnome-do will be running on backgroup. So you can summon gnome-do by only pressing Super<Windows Key> + Space
5. Done
To use Gnome-do, press the summon key and type the keyword of the file or application which you wanted to open or run.

Yesterday was my 25th birthday, to think that I do not have any friend and relative here, I thought my birthday will be just like a normal day.
I WAS WRONG, I experienced something that I never experience before during my birthday. Something HORRIFIED.
What happens is, when I am sleeping that night, I felt something pressing my chest and the feeling is like being pressed by a heavy object, the pressure made me hard to breathe and hearing breathing sound whispering on my ears, so I awake from my sleep and trying to move my body but I can't.
So I opened up my eyes and I saw some white object looks like cloud surrounding my chest! Yes, CLOUD! I'm scared to be honest and start chanting "Amitabha" on my mind. The sensation fade away immediately after the chanting.
The feeling is so real yet it's like a bad dream to me, so I also cannot tell whether it's really happened or not. Anyhow, after I'm free to move my body, I continue my sleep eventhough I am scared.
Sweat~!! I don't know why I got so much guts to continue my sleep or maybe I'm just tired..
I think this is what people's called "Ghost Press Bed" in Mandarin and the "Sleep Paralysis" in medical term. To think something like this happened during my birthday, am I just being bad luck or some unknown object want to wish me Happy birthday? ... AMITABHA! AMITABHA

Due to Lehman Brothers Holdings declare bankruptcy causing the upheaval on Wall Street and less damage from the hurrican lke to the oil and gas infrastructure. The oil price pullback accelerated and went down to less than $100 per barrel.
The global oil price drop significantly from records high $147 per barrel drop until less than $100 per barrel? But why are we still paying RM2.55 per litre?
Malaysia government has promised their people's they will reduce the price when the global oil price dropped and maintain around $120 - $130 per barrel. Now, the price has dropped even more than expected, so we definitely should enjoy cheaper oil price.

Wikimapia is like a web based google earth + wiki. You may only use it to search the maps that have been already marked with place name and description, or you may add your own description to the unmark place in the map.

Recently, 2 of my best friends just losses someone they love and enter into grieving.

Is Understandable when losing someone means so much to you, the pain can be fatal.

It will be a great event for all the F1 fevers in Singapore, to be able to participates the first F1 Grand Prix in Singapore and the World's first F1 night race. The F1 teams will travel to Singapore and the race will begins at 26 Sept 2008 held in the Marina Bay area.

In Singapore, every year they have Great Singapore Sale (GSS), and now Malaysia also have Malaysia Savers Sale (MSS).

This question have been wandering around my mind for almost 1 year. I saw many of my ex Taiwan colleagues like to use this "Orz" in their daily conversation in instant messenger. And I even saw some T-shirt printed "Orz". What is Orz actually? Is it a new word, symbol or acronym?
I tried to ask my friends and the way they answer me is like this.

Few days back I received a comment from a friend, saying my blog are a bit messy and untidy. All the while I thought my blog are simple and clean, I didn't expect getting this kind of feedback, anyway I accept criticism. Any constructive comment I'm also willing to listen.
Therefore, I decided to look for a new theme and after browsing to a few wordpress theme websites, at the end I still want to stick back with my belove popblue. I don't know why, I just love it. So, I decided to enhance abit by changing the theme to popblue 3 column and modify it.

Yes, you are right. The fastest way is to use an IP subnet calculator. You can find tons of free IP subnet calculators over the Internet, example like http://www.subnet-calculator.com/
But, what if something happened to your PC, where you can't use the software or internet to do the calculation for you. Therefore, you should always have a backup, like every IT staff did. Make yourself a backup and learn how to count without any 3rd party tools.
Actually is not as difficult as you think. Here, I will show you an easy way to do it.
Given a scenario, if provides you the IP address and subnet mask. And ask you to find out what is the number of valid hosts, subnet and broadcast address.
Example:
IP - 192.168.10.34
subnet mask - 255.255.255.224 or CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) :/27
To find subnet and broadcast address.
1) 256 - 224(subnet mask last octet) = 32First subnet is 32.
Second subnet is 32 x 2 = 64
Third subnet is 32 x 3 = 96
.
.
.etc
Since our IP (192.168.10.34) is fall between 32 - 64 subnet, so the subnet address is 192.168.10.32 and the broadcast address is 192.168.10.63.
Find Host range
1) Valid hosts range is 192.168.10.33 - 192.168.10.62
- as 192.168.10.32 is subnet, 192.168.10.63 is broadcast
Find total valid hosts
1) 192.168.10.(62) - 192.168.10.(33) = 29
or
32 - 27(CIDR) = 5
2y = 25 - 2
= 31 - 2
= 29
All solution only got 1 step. Simple isn't it. Still don't understand? Nevermind, let's do another example.

Recently, I read an article talking about 'why Malaysian men rape', and the title is called 'she was ripe for thee plucking', this is what rapist think and it's like describing women as an items, which is total discrimination against women.
In this article, A statistic shows that everyday an average of four women are raped and rape cases just like petrol price hike, every years keep on increasing. From 1980 till 2007, the number have been increase tremendously. The following is the chart shows the raped cases happen in different year.

The number might be more because all these are reported cases, unreported cases are not in count.
Being a Malaysian, I really feel sad to see the number of raped cases happen in my own country. I always wonder, why rapist doesn't want to find prostitute to release their urge. Do you know why?
Base on the research did by Dr Rohana Ariffin after interviews with 90 convicted rapists. Rapist think prostitute are dirty. Pathetic isn't it, like raping is something clean to them.
We really need to find a cure, infact, this is an interesting topic to discuss because to reduce the number, we need to know what and how rapist think, why they committed this unforgiven crime. Is it the purnishment are not hard enough? Do they feel any regret after committed this crime?
In the mean time, all ladies should be more caution not only when you are walking alone or going out with stranger, but also when you are with friends and colleagues. We tend to believe that rapists are someone unknown to the victims but the reality is that most victims were raped by someone they know, a friend, former partner, even a relative. Even those trusted in authority like parents, policemen, religious leaders and community elders have been charged with rape.
Hence, I hope the government of Malaysia will tighten up the law to punish those who committed rape crime and improve the security by installing surveillance camera on dark/quiet area and add more patrol car.
Ubuntu Hardy: For those who are not familiar with setting up a crontab through CLI and looking for a GUI (graphic user interface) alternative, you may want to install Gnome Schedule. Gnome Schedule provides GUI for users to easily manage their scheduled tasks without going through any command.
To install gnome-schedule
Steps:
1) open a Terminal and run the following command
sudo apt-get install gnome-schedule

To Run Gnome Schedule
Steps:
1) Goto "System>Preferences>Scheduled tasks"
2) Click on "New" to create the type of schedule task you wants to create.
